Argentina’s tactical plan to stop Lamine Yamal ahead of Finalissima

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni is already deep into tactical mode ahead of next month’s Finalissima, where his side will face Spain national football team and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal at Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

The March 27 showdown will pit the reigning Copa América champions against the European champions — and set up a fascinating subplot: Yamal sharing the stage with Lionel Messi for the first time.

According to reports, Scaloni is crafting a detailed plan to neutralize the Barcelona prodigy. Nicolás Tagliafico is expected to be the primary defender tasked with containing Yamal on the flank. But it won’t be a one-on-one battle.

Scaloni is reportedly preparing a midfield with added physical presence, ensuring constant defensive support. One midfielder will be instructed to consistently drop back and close down space, limiting Yamal’s freedom between the lines — an area where the 18-year-old thrives.

Yamal is expected to return to Spain’s squad after missing late-2025 World Cup qualifiers due to treatment for pubalgia. Now fully fit, all eyes will be on whether Argentina’s structure can slow down one of football’s brightest young stars on one of its biggest stages.
