Angel Di María could be heading back to the Argentina national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to 1978 World Cup winner Ubaldo Fillol. In a recent interview, Fillol revealed that members of Argentina’s coaching staff and players are reportedly speaking with Di María about a potential return, saying he has a “hunch” the veteran winger will be convinced to play.

Di María retired from international football after helping Argentina win the 2024 Copa América, stating he had completed his cycle after winning everything possible, including the 2022 World Cup. Over his international career from 2008 to 2024, he made 145 appearances and scored 31 goals, playing in four World Cups and multiple Copa América tournaments.

After leaving the national team, Di María spent one more season with Benfica before returning home to play for Rosario Central. At 38, he has impressed in the Argentine league, scoring 10 goals and adding four assists in 22 matches. Fillol admitted he initially doubted Di María’s level but now believes he remains in top form and fully capable of competing at the World Cup.

With Argentina preparing to defend its title, Di María’s possible return could add experience, leadership, and firepower.
