aluCine Turns 25: A Night Where Salsa, Cinema, and Culture Come Alive

October 14, 2025

Toronto’s own aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival is celebrating a major milestone — 25 years of showcasing Latin creativity, community, and cinematic brilliance. And they’re kicking things off in true aluCine fashion: with rhythm, resistance, and one unforgettable party.

On Thursday, October 16th, the festival opens its 25th anniversary edition with a special Toronto premiere of La Salsa Vive at Hot Docs Cinema — followed by a dance-fueled celebration at Lula Lounge that promises to keep hearts (and hips) moving well into the night.

🎥 Part I: Film Screening – La Salsa Vive

The night starts at Hot Docs Cinema (7:00 PM) with La Salsa Vive — a stunning new documentary by Colombian director Juan Carvajal that dives deep into the beating heart of salsa.

Spanning New York, where salsa first took shape, and Cali, Colombia, where it thrives like nowhere else, the film is a love letter to rhythm, resilience, and cultural connection.

With appearances by legends like Rubén Blades, Henry Fiol, and Willie Rosario, La Salsa Vive reminds us that salsa isn’t just music — it’s heritage, identity, and lifeblood. Through dancers, collectors, and young dreamers, Carvajal paints a vibrant portrait of a movement that continues to unite generations across continents.

💿 Part II: Opening Reception – Salsa en el Solar: Roots of Resistance and Rhythm

After the screening, the celebration moves to Lula Lounge (10:00 PM) for an all-vinyl salsa party that bridges past and present.

Under the theme Salsa en el Solar: Roots of Resistance and Rhythm, the afterparty pays homage to salsa’s rebellious spirit — the rhythm that once pulsed through barrios and dance floors as a form of freedom and defiance.

Spinning deep, fiery grooves all night long will be Sonic Sancocho, founded by olasconola and Juana Go-gó, along with DJ Candela (Sinara). Expect nothing but salsa dura, scratchy vinyl, and a dance floor that refuses to quit.

$40 (film + party) | $25 (party only)

🎉 aluCine at 25: A Legacy in Motion

For 25 years, aluCine has been a pillar of Latinx cinema and culture in Canada, spotlighting stories that challenge, inspire, and connect.

This year’s Opening Night Gala embodies everything the festival stands for — art, heritage, community, and joy. By pairing the Toronto premiere of La Salsa Vive with a full-blown salsa celebration, aluCine invites audiences not just to watch Latin culture on screen, but to live it.

Because after all, salsa — like aluCine — has never been just about performance. It’s about resistance, rhythm, and remembering where we come from.
