At 38 years and 14 days old, Al Horford became the oldest first-time NBA champion after winning his first title in his 186th playoff game. The Celtics defeated the Mavericks 106-88 in Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals. Horford, who contributed with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists, is now the fourth-oldest NBA champion. This victory also marked him as the first Dominican to win an NBA title. Horford’s journey was celebrated in his hometown of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, where watch parties were held in his honor.

Horford’s family, including his wife Amelia Vega and their children, joined in the celebration, reflecting on his inspiring journey. Vega believes this win will motivate Dominican children to pursue basketball. Friends and former teammates also expressed their pride and joy for Horford’s achievement.

Horford has one year left on his contract with the Celtics and hopes to continue playing into his 40s, attributing his longevity to his Christian faith and physical conditioning. He remains a key figure for the Celtics, admired by his coach and teammates for his professionalism and leadership.
