A humpback whale briefly swallowed a kayaker in Chilean Patagonia before quickly releasing him unharmed. The dramatic moment, captured on video, went viral.

Last Saturday, Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell, in Bahía El Águila, near the Strait of Magellan, when a whale surfaced and engulfed him and his kayak for a few seconds before letting him go. Dell, just meters away, filmed the incident while reassuring his son to stay calm.

Adrián described feeling terror and initially believed he had been swallowed. After resurfacing, his fear shifted to concern for his father and the risk of hypothermia in the frigid waters. However, he quickly reached his father’s kayak and was assisted to safety. Both returned to shore uninjured.

The Strait of Magellan, a popular adventure tourism destination about 1,600 miles (3,000 km) south of Santiago, is known for its cold waters, where temperatures range between 39°F (4°C) and 68°F (20°C) even in summer.

While whale attacks on humans are extremely rare, whale deaths from ship collisions have increased in recent years, and strandings have become more frequent in the last decade.
