Argentina make huge Lionel Messi decision, years after attempting the same for Diego Maradona

The number 10 jersey in football, especially for the Argentinian national team, holds significant symbolic value, representing a star and a leader on the pitch. In homage to Diego Maradona, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) retired the number 10 jersey after the 2002 World Cup. Ariel Ortega was the last player to officially wear it in the Argentina-Peru match. Recently, after Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, AFA president Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia announced that when Messi retires from the national team, the number 10 jersey will be permanently retired in his honor, as a recognition for his outstanding contributions, including 180 appearances and 106 goals for Argentina and victories in the Copa America (2021) and the 2022 World Cup.
