Chile or Peru could still take Ecuador’s place at World Cup

FIFA’s disciplinary committee initiated proceedings earlier this year after Chile’s FA lodged a complaint alleging possible forgery of documents that established the player’s nationality. The world football governing body later dismissed all charges against the Ecuadorian FA on June 10.

It said appeal judges “deemed that on the basis of the documents presented, the player was to be considered as holding permanent Ecuadorian nationality in accordance” with football’s legal statutes.

But both Chile and Peru appealed the decision to CAS. Chile want to be given Ecuador’s place as if every match Castillo played was forfeited, they would qualify in fourth place. Peru, meanwhile, want Ecuador’s place as they were in fifth in the CONMEBOL qualification process, and are therefore the next best runner-up.

CAS have now scheduled in the hearing for November 4 and 5.

A statement to The Athletic added: “The Peruvian and Chilean associations have requested that the decision be issued on or before 10 November 2022.”

If that date was met, this would allow either nation to take part in the World Cup as it would give them 10 days to prepare for the tournament, which begins on November 20.

Ecuador, Peru or Chile will be in Group A alongside Qatar as well as Senegaland the Netherlands. Qatar are currently scheduled to take on Ecuador in the tournament’s opening game.
