Two of Colombia’s biggest global music stars are back together.

Shakira and Maluma have reunited for their new single “Agua,” marking their first collaboration in eight years and bringing back a musical partnership responsible for some of the biggest Latin hits of the past decade.

Released on September 17, “Agua” takes the Colombian superstars in a different direction from their previous collaborations. Rather than leaning heavily into reggaeton, the new track is driven by merengue, blending tropical rhythms with contemporary pop production.

It’s a fitting return for a duo whose musical chemistry has already produced massive international success.

From “Chantaje” to “Agua”

Shakira and Maluma first joined forces in 2016 for “Chantaje,” which became a worldwide hit and spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.

They followed that success with “Trap” and then “Clandestino” in 2018.

Now, eight years after their last major duet, “Agua” brings the two Colombian artists back together — but without simply trying to recreate what worked before.

The new song embraces merengue and tropical percussion, with Shakira and Maluma trading vocals throughout the track.

A New Video Comes With the Song

“Agua” also arrived with an official music video directed by Hannah Lux Davis, whose credits include work with some of the biggest names in international pop.

Water naturally becomes the central visual theme, with reflections, movement, dance and liquid surfaces playing into the chemistry between Shakira and Maluma.

The release adds another chapter to a collaboration that has now stretched across a decade.

The timing is also interesting.

Shakira is in the final stretch of her massive Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, including a 12-show residency in Madrid beginning September 18.

Maluma, meanwhile, continues his latest musical era with “Agua” joining the world of his recent project Loco X Volver.

Despite both artists building enormous careers independently, their collaborations have always carried a special connection for Colombian music fans.

“Chantaje” arrived when Maluma was still establishing himself as a global superstar, while Shakira had already spent years as one of Latin music’s most recognizable international artists.

A decade later, they’re meeting again as two of Colombia’s biggest musical exports.

And after eight years apart, Shakira and Maluma apparently still have some unfinished business together.
