Penélope Cruz Honoured in Toronto With Special TIFF Award Celebrating Her Remarkable Career

Toronto rolled out the red carpet Sunday night for one of the biggest stars in international cinema.

Academy Award-winning Spanish actress Penélope Cruz was honoured at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, receiving the TIFF Special Tribute Award in recognition of her extraordinary career and lasting contribution to film.

The honour was presented during TIFF’s annual Tribute Awards gala at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto, one of the signature events of the festival and an evening that traditionally helps kick off the film industry’s awards season.

For Cruz, however, the night was about much more than adding another trophy to an already impressive collection.

The 52-year-old actress used her acceptance speech to thank the people who believed in her throughout her career — particularly those who gave her opportunities when she was just beginning.

She also reflected on what she would tell her younger self after more than three decades in the movie business.

Her advice?

Remember to rest once in a while.

Cruz admitted that’s advice she still has trouble following.

It’s been an incredible journey for an actress who began working in Spanish cinema as a teenager and eventually became one of the country’s most internationally recognized stars.

In 2009, Cruz made history when she became the first Spanish woman to win an Academy Award, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Her career has included acclaimed performances in films such as Volver, Parallel Mothers, Nine, Vanilla Sky and Ferrari, as well as a decades-long creative relationship with legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.

And Cruz didn’t come to Toronto simply to collect an award.

She’s at TIFF with two new movies.

One is Bunker, the new film from director Florian Zeller in which Cruz stars alongside her husband, fellow Spanish Oscar winner Javier Bardem.

The couple arrived in Toronto fresh off an extraordinary reception at the Venice Film Festival, where Bunker received a standing ovation lasting approximately 16 minutes.

Cruz is also appearing at TIFF with La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, better known in Spain as Los Javis.

Ambrossi and Calvo were also the ones who presented Cruz with her TIFF honour Sunday night.

She wasn’t the only major international name being celebrated in Toronto.

The 2026 TIFF Tribute Awards also honoured Helen Mirren, Seth Rogen, Isabelle Huppert, Fan Bingbing, South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, Rosalind Eleazar, Siân Heder, Bassam Tariq and cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney even made an appearance on the red carpet earlier in the evening, joining the stars and filmmakers gathered in downtown Toronto.

But for Spanish and Latin audiences, Cruz’s recognition was an especially notable moment.

She arrived in Hollywood speaking English as a second language and ultimately built a career that crossed Spanish, European and Hollywood cinema without leaving her roots behind.

More than 30 years after beginning that journey, Toronto has now added another major honour to her résumé.

And judging by her own advice to her younger self, Penélope Cruz might finally deserve a little rest.

Although something tells us she probably won’t take it.
