Mattel is once again celebrating one of Mexico’s most meaningful traditions with the release of its 2026 Día de Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls.

The new collectibles are part of Barbie Signature’s annual Día de Muertos series, which pays tribute to the customs, artistry and symbolism surrounding the Mexican holiday honouring loved ones who have passed away.

This year, Barbie and Ken arrive dressed for what Mattel describes as a grand masquerade ball, with coordinating deep-red looks and elaborate details inspired by Día de Muertos.

Barbie wears a dramatic deep-red satin mermaid gown featuring embroidered patterns inspired by traditional Mexican pottery. The design incorporates a skeletal ribcage motif, while her look is completed with a sugar-skull-inspired mask surrounded by sculpted roses.

Ken gets an equally elaborate look, wearing a deep-red knee-length jacquard jacket featuring a subtle sugar skull design. Underneath, a black shirt and pants feature bone-inspired details, while a skull-style mask and removable top hat decorated with a red rose complete the outfit.

Both dolls were designed by Edna Vogel-Amezcua, with packaging designed by Charis Ceniseroz. Each collectible also includes a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity.

A Barbie Tradition That Continues to Grow

Mattel’s Día de Muertos collection has become an annual tradition of its own.

Through the series, Barbie has explored different elements associated with the celebration, including calaveras, marigolds, traditional clothing, Mexican artistry and the connection between remembrance and celebration.

Día de Muertos, traditionally observed on November 1 and 2, isn’t simply about mourning those who have died. At its heart, the celebration is about remembering loved ones and keeping their memories alive.

That spirit is once again at the centre of Mattel’s 2026 collection.

And these aren’t your typical Barbie dolls.

The elaborate clothing, packaging and certificates of authenticity make the releases particularly appealing to adult Barbie collectors as well as people looking for pieces celebrating Mexican culture.

For Canadian collectors, Mattel Canada currently lists the 2026 Día de Muertos Barbie and Ken at $135 CAD each.

With their dramatic red outfits, calavera-inspired masks and intricate Mexican-inspired details, the 2026 dolls might be among the most striking Día de Muertos releases Mattel has produced yet.

More than anything, the collection is another example of Mexican culture and traditions continuing to find a place on a massive global stage.

And in this case, Barbie and Ken are helping tell the story.
