A religious celebration in central Mexico turned tragic after a massive fireworks explosion killed at least 10 people and injured 64 others.

The explosion happened Saturday night in the community of Santa María Canchesdá, in the municipality of Temascalcingo, State of Mexico, as hundreds of people gathered for festivities honouring Our Lady of Light.

Residents had been preparing to watch a traditional fireworks display near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church when pyrotechnic material exploded.

The force of the blast caused part of the structure to collapse, leaving people trapped beneath debris. Emergency crews from several surrounding municipalities rushed to the community as residents also helped search for survivors.

Among the 64 people injured were children, older adults and two local priests. The priests were hospitalized but were reported to be out of danger.

Videos from the scene showed smoke, debris and residents desperately searching the area following the explosion.

Authorities in the State of Mexico say an investigation is now underway to determine exactly what led to the deadly blast. Pyrotechnics are widely used during patron saint festivals and other religious celebrations throughout Mexico.

The tragedy has left the community of Santa María Canchesdá mourning what was supposed to be a night of celebration.
