Bolivia is dealing with a major emergency after two powerful explosions ripped through a military base in Viacha, leaving at least two people dead, more than 80 injured and 14 military personnel missing.

The explosions happened Friday afternoon at the Bolívar military base, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of La Paz. The force of the blasts damaged nearby homes, shattered windows and sent debris flying across the surrounding neighbourhood.

What Happened?

Bolivia’s Defence Ministry says the first explosion involved black powder associated with pyrotechnic material being stored at the facility.

A second and much larger explosion followed, but authorities have not yet determined exactly what caused it or what material was involved. An investigation is now underway.

Among the missing are a sergeant and 13 young conscripts, most just 18 or 19 years old. Search and rescue teams continue working through the damaged military facility.

The two confirmed victims were also young men completing their mandatory military service.

Families Wait for Answers

The explosions have devastated the surrounding community, damaging dozens of homes and forcing some residents to evacuate while authorities determine whether the area is safe.

Families of the missing soldiers have gathered near the military base desperately waiting for information about their loved ones.

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has ordered what he called a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause of the explosions and whether proper safety protocols were followed.

Authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning as rescue efforts continue.

The situation remains developing, and the casualty numbers could change as crews search through the destruction.
