Colombian forces say an airstrike in the southern department of Guaviare killed 20 members of the EMC, the largest FARC dissident organization, while five others were captured and two minors were recovered from the camp. The operation targeted the Carolina Ramírez Front linked to Iván Mordisco, currently one of Colombia’s most wanted rebel commanders.

The scale is what makes this especially significant: a military source told AFP it was Colombia’s deadliest government bombing of guerrillas since the Juan Manuel Santos era. It is also the third bombing carried out under new President Abelardo de la Espriella and signals a sharp move toward military confrontation with armed groups.

Why it matters: This is bigger than one military operation. Colombia appears to be entering a very different phase in its decades-long conflict with armed groups, particularly after the previous government’s emphasis on negotiated “Total Peace.” There’s also a serious controversy developing around the renewed bombing campaign: authorities confirmed three minors aged 15, 15 and 16 were killed in a separate Guaviare strike on August 27, highlighting the continuing recruitment of children by armed groups and raising questions about the government’s tactics.
