Beyoncé is stepping up to help Colombia following the devastating earthquake that struck the country earlier this month.

The global superstar has announced a personal donation of US$1 million to organizations providing emergency relief to communities affected by the powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10.

The donation was announced by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment on August 25 and will be directed toward immediate assistance for some of the hardest-hit communities.

$1 Million for Food and Housing

According to Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s donation is specifically intended to help provide food and housing supplies to people affected by the disaster.

The earthquake’s epicentre was near San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó department, approximately 150 miles from Bogotá.

The quake caused widespread destruction across western Colombia, damaging homes, hospitals, roads and other critical infrastructure. Difficult terrain and damaged transportation routes have also complicated efforts to reach some remote communities.

Thousands of Colombians have been injured or displaced since the earthquake, while humanitarian organizations continue working to provide food, medical assistance and shelter.

International Support Continues to Grow

Beyoncé’s contribution comes as international organizations and individuals continue mobilizing support for Colombia.

World Central Kitchen has teams and local partners providing meals to affected communities, while organizations including Direct Relief are supporting medical teams and helping transport blood, medicine and emergency supplies into difficult-to-reach areas.

The US$1-million donation also continues Beyoncé’s history of supporting communities affected by major disasters.

In 2017, Beyoncé donated proceeds from her remix of J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente” to disaster relief efforts following hurricanes and earthquakes affecting Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Caribbean and the United States.

Now Colombia is receiving that support directly.

Colombia Faces a Long Recovery

The August 10 earthquake has become one of Colombia’s most devastating natural disasters in recent years.

While the immediate rescue operation captured international attention, communities are now confronting the much longer process of rebuilding homes, restoring healthcare services and repairing damaged infrastructure.
