Canada’s World Cup clash against Qatar just became even more important.
Earlier today, Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1, moving to the top of Group B with four points. That result dramatically changes the landscape for Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia heading into Thursday night’s match at BC Place.
With Switzerland now sitting alone in first place, a Canadian victory over Qatar would move Jesse Marsch’s side to four points and level with the Swiss atop the group heading into the final round of matches. More importantly, it would put Canada in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time ever.
A draw would leave Canada needing a result against Switzerland in its final group match, while a loss would put enormous pressure on the Canadians heading into the group finale.
Simply put, after Switzerland’s victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada’s matchup against Qatar has gone from important to potentially season-defining.
