Messi and Argentina Are Taking Their Asado Tradition to the World Cup

When it comes to football, few countries are as passionate as Argentina. But as the national team defend its title at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it’s not just the players that made the trip to North America — more than 500 kilograms of Argentine beef went along for the ride too.

According to reports from Argentina, the world champions have shipped a massive supply of beef to their team base in Kansas City to ensure players can maintain their usual diet throughout the tournament.

The shipment includes some of Argentina’s most beloved cuts, including lomo, vacío, entraña, matambre, peceto, and asado de tira. The meat reportedly underwent months of planning and strict customs and health inspections before being approved for entry into the United States.

For Argentina, this isn’t simply about comfort food.

Coaches and medical staff view nutrition as a key part of performance, especially during a demanding tournament where recovery and preparation can make the difference between winning and losing.

The move also reflects the country’s deep cultural connection to beef and the traditional asado. In Argentina, an asado is much more than a barbecue — it’s a social ritual and a symbol of national identity.

Several players have spoken openly about their love of traditional Argentine food. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is known for enjoying milanesas with purée, while defender Nicolás Otamendi has described his perfect meal as an Argentine asado shared with family and friends.

This isn’t the first time Argentina has brought its culinary traditions to a World Cup. During the 2022 tournament in Qatar, the team reportedly transported more than 2,600 kilograms of beef. Argentina went on to lift the trophy, and the beef shipment became a symbol of keeping home close while competing on football’s biggest stage.

As Lionel Messi compete for another World Cup run, one thing is certain: Kansas City may be thousands of kilometres from Buenos Aires, but the menu will remain unmistakably Argentine.
