Karol G added another historic milestone to her career Monday night, becoming the first artist since Whitney Houston in 2009 to receive the prestigious International Artist Award of Excellence at the American Music Awards 2026.

Presented by John Legend, the award recognizes artists whose music and cultural influence have resonated globally. Previous recipients include icons such as Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, and the Bee Gees.

Accepting the honor, Karol G reflected on finding purpose through music and the ability to connect with people around the world. “My life is meaningful because of my music and helping others through it,” she told the audience before thanking fans in Spanish.

The night got even better moments later when Karol G was also named Best Latin Album winner for Tropicoqueta, prompting an emotional reaction from the Medellín superstar. She also performed her song Ivonny Bonita during the broadcast.

The recognition caps off a remarkable year for the Colombian artist. Just weeks ago, Karol G made history as the first Latina woman to headline the legendary Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. During that groundbreaking performance, she dedicated the achievement to the Latino community and highlighted the importance of representation on one of music’s biggest stages.

From becoming the first woman with a Spanish-language album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Mañana Será Bonito to now receiving one of the music industry’s highest international honors, Karol G continues to break barriers while elevating Latin music on a global scale.
