Daddy Yankee is receiving one of the highest honors in Latin music.

The reggaeton pioneer has been named the 2026 Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy—a prestigious recognition awarded to artists who have made lasting contributions to both music and philanthropy.

For nearly three decades, Daddy Yankee—born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez—has been a defining force in the global rise of Latin music. From shaping the sound of reggaeton to helping bring the genre into the mainstream, his influence has impacted generations of artists and fans alike.

“Daddy Yankee has been a defining force in the global rise of Latin music,” said Manuel Abud, CEO of the Latin Recording Academy. “His leadership, discipline and vision opened doors for a genre and inspired an entire generation of creators.”

His journey is rooted in resilience. Growing up in the barrios of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Daddy Yankee transformed lived experiences into music that spoke to a broader audience. At a time when reggaeton faced stigma and limited acceptance, he helped legitimize the genre—turning it into a global movement.

That movement reached a defining moment with his 2004 album Barrio Fino, which sold over eight million copies and introduced the world to hits like “Gasolina”—a track that became a cultural phenomenon and helped take reggaeton worldwide. Years later, his collaboration on “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi would become one of the biggest songs in global music history.

Beyond music, Daddy Yankee has also made a significant impact through philanthropy, supporting vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico through his foundation.

After retiring from touring in 2022 with his record-breaking La Última Vuelta World Tour, which generated over $200 million and sold nearly two million tickets, he returned in 2025 with a more reflective, faith-driven project, showing a new chapter of personal and artistic growth.

“This recognition… represents years of discipline, struggle, faith and commitment to our culture,” Daddy Yankee shared. “It’s to honor Puerto Rico, all Latinos, and the generation that believed in our music when no one else did.”

He will be officially honored on November 11 during Latin Grammy Week, in a private gala celebrating his legacy.
