BMO Field Ready for the World: Toronto Stadium Set for FIFA 2026

Toronto is officially ready for the world stage. Major upgrades to BMO Field at Exhibition Place have now been completed ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the venue will temporarily be known as Toronto Stadium. Delivered through a partnership between the City of Toronto and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the renovations prepare the stadium to host six matches starting in June 2026—including Canada’s opening game.

The project was completed in two phases between December 2024 and March 2026, allowing the stadium to remain active during MLS and CFL seasons. Early upgrades focused on enhancing broadcast systems, lighting, audio, and fan amenities, while the final phase introduced tournament-specific features like temporary seating, expanded hospitality areas, and upgraded team facilities.

One of the most noticeable changes is the increase in capacity from approximately 28,000 to 45,000 seats, thanks to temporary stands that will be removed after the tournament. On the pitch, a new FIFA-standard hybrid playing surface has been installed, alongside improved locker rooms, dugouts, and player areas. Fans can also expect a significantly upgraded experience, with new LED videoboards, enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, reimagined concourses, and expanded food and beverage options—including self-serve technology.

Beyond matchday improvements, the stadium now features permanent upgrades such as premium seating areas, a new centre-field lounge, better accessibility, and improved circulation throughout the venue—ensuring long-term benefits well beyond the World Cup.

The total investment reached $157.9 million, with the City of Toronto contributing $132.9 million and MLSE adding $25 million. Federal and provincial support also played a key role in bringing the project to life as part of Canada’s broader World Cup hosting efforts.

Toronto is set to host six matches during the tournament, and the economic impact is expected to be significant—generating up to $940 million in total output, including $520 million in GDP growth and over 6,600 new jobs.

More than just a sporting event, the FIFA World Cup 2026 represents a defining moment for Toronto. It’s an opportunity to showcase the city’s diversity, energy, and global appeal—while creating a lasting legacy for fans, communities, and future events long after the final whistle.

Toronto FC v Inter Miami CF – May 9, 2026

May 9 isn’t just a game — it’s a city moment, and we’re working directly with MLSE to bring the Toronto Latinos community together for Toronto FC vs Inter Miami at BMO Field — a chance to watch Messi and other World Cup-bound stars live, right here in our backyard weeks before the FIFA World Cup.

But we’re not just pulling up for 90 minutes. We’re starting with a pre-party at the stadium hours before the match, and finishing the night with an afterparty steps from the field. No moving your car. No breaking the vibe. Just one full-day experience. If you’re coming, come with us.
