Messi and Inter Miami’s White House Visit Turns Political as Trump Welcomes MLS Champions

March 5, 2026

Inter Miami CF visited the White House on March 5 to celebrate their 2025 MLS Cup championship, continuing the long-standing tradition of U.S. sports champions being honored by the president.

The ceremony, hosted by Donald Trump, included club owner Jorge Mas, MLS commissioner Don Garber, and star players led by captain Lionel Messi.

However, the event quickly drew attention for reasons beyond soccer. During his remarks in the East Room, Trump spent several minutes discussing foreign policy and global conflicts before acknowledging Inter Miami’s championship. The players, including Messi and Luis Suárez, stood behind the president as he spoke.

Messi, known for avoiding political statements throughout his career, remained largely quiet during the ceremony, smiling and nodding as Trump referenced his son’s admiration for both Messi and rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The visit highlights the intersection of sports and politics, especially as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup later this year.

While the event was meant to celebrate Inter Miami’s historic MLS Cup win, much of the attention shifted to the political backdrop surrounding the ceremony.

Toronto FC v Inter Miami CF – May 9, 2026

May 9 isn’t just a game — it’s a city moment, and we’re working directly with MLSE to bring the Toronto Latinos community together for Toronto FC vs Inter Miami at BMO Field — a chance to watch Messi and other World Cup-bound stars live, right here in our backyard weeks before the FIFA World Cup.

But we’re not just pulling up for 90 minutes. We’re starting with a pre-party at the stadium hours before the match, and finishing the night with an afterparty steps from the field. No moving your car. No breaking the vibe. Just one full-day experience. If you’re coming, come with us.
