Brazilian superstar Anitta has won a major legal victory after a U.S. federal judge dismissed a lawsuit accusing her of copying her 2023 hit “Funk Rave.”
The case, filed in January by songwriters Giorgio Trovato and Giuseppe Di Caccamo Jr, alleged that Anitta had lifted the rhythm and chorus from their 2006 song “Sácalo”, which was released by their group Erotico in 2007.
However, the judge found the claims “speculative at best,” ruling that there was no evidence Anitta — who would have been just 14 years old at the time — had ever heard the song. “Allowing plaintiffs’ claims to proceed on such unsubstantiated and unpled theories would not pass muster,” wrote Judge Moore in the decision.
The court also noted that the songs were not sufficiently similar to justify a copyright case, effectively closing the lawsuit in Anitta’s favor.
With this ruling, Anitta can continue her international ascent without the cloud of legal controversy surrounding one of her biggest hits.
