Ecuador Holds the U.S. to 1–1 Draw in Texas Friendly

Ecuador earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against the United States on Friday night at Austin’s Q2 Stadium, showing depth and determination despite missing several key players.

Without stars like Moisés Caicedo and Piero Hincapié, La Tri relied on veteran leadership and counter-attacking precision to frustrate the Americans. Their moment came in the first half when captain Enner Valencia slipped behind the U.S. defense, collected a through ball, and calmly slotted it past goalkeeper Matthew Freese to give Ecuador a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

The U.S. pressed aggressively in the second half, and while Ecuador’s defensive shape held for long stretches, Folarin Balogun eventually broke through with a close-range equalizer in the 64th minute.

Still, for a side missing many regular starters, Ecuador showed encouraging signs—especially in transition play and tactical discipline under pressure. Young players gained valuable minutes, while the experienced Valencia once again proved his importance as both scorer and leader.

Though the result may feel like a missed opportunity after leading for much of the match, Ecuador’s draw on the road against a nearly full-strength U.S. team underscores the team’s resilience and growing depth as they prepare for future CONMEBOL challenges.
