For the first time in MLB history, the Toronto Blue Jays will face the New York Yankees in the postseason.
The Yankees punched their ticket to the ALDS with a 4–0 Wild Card Series win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. Rookie starter Cam Schlittler was the hero, striking out 12 over eight shutout innings while New York capitalized on shaky Boston defense in a decisive fourth inning. RBI singles from Amed Rosario and Anthony Volpe, plus a costly error by Nathaniel Lowe, sealed the victory.
Toronto earned the AL East crown via tiebreaker after finishing with the same 94–68 record as New York but owning the season series 8–5. The division title granted the Blue Jays a bye into the ALDS.
Game 1 of the best-of-five series is set for Saturday at 4:08 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre, with Game 2 scheduled for the same time on Sunday. The rest of the series shifts to New York, with times still to be announced.
The Yankees are expected to turn to reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil or Will Warren to open Game 1, followed by Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and potentially Schlittler later in the series. Toronto has yet to announce its rotation, though Kevin Gausman and Shane Bieber are strong candidates for the opener.
The rivalry heated up during the regular season. After trailing New York for the first three months, Toronto surged into first place in July with a four-game sweep of the Yankees. New York clawed back in September, but both clubs finished on identical records.
“They’re a complete team,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said after the Wild Card win. “Toronto is going to be rocking, and we love that.”
Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. framed the series as a chance for redemption: “We get to redeem ourselves against a team that’s been beating up on us all year.”
With two powerhouse rosters and a long-standing rivalry, the ALDS between the Blue Jays and Yankees promises to be one of the postseason’s must-watch matchups.
