FIFA World Cup: How Ecuador Became South America’s Dark Horse

Look at the South American World Cup qualifying table and one thing is clear: Argentina are untouchable at the top. But the real story is further down — and Ecuador are quietly rewriting history.

Despite starting the campaign with a three-point penalty for past infractions, Ecuador have been the second-best team on the continent. They’ve taken points off Uruguay and Colombia, lost only to Argentina and Brazil, and have built a reputation as one of the hardest sides to beat.

At the heart of this transformation is Sebastián Beccacece, the Argentine coach who took over in August 2024. Under him, Ecuador have gone on a record 10-game unbeaten run and boast the stingiest defense in South America, conceding just two goals in 11 matches. Anchored by stars like Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, Willian Pacho, and Pervis Estupiñán, La Tri have turned resilience into an art form.

But Beccacece’s ambitions go beyond qualification. “We value our qualification, celebrate it, but we’re already thinking about taking one more step,” he says. For Ecuador, that means making it past the second round of a World Cup for the first time.

Their rise has also been powered by a domestic revolution. Clubs like Independiente del Valle have built world-class youth pipelines, producing stars who leap directly to Europe. With Moisés Caicedo at Chelsea and teenage prodigy Kendry Páez already attracting global attention, Ecuadorian football’s future looks brighter than ever.

Even their approach to home games reflects new confidence. Traditionally relying on Quito’s high altitude for an edge, Ecuador are now taking on giants like Brazil and Argentina at sea level in Guayaquil — a bold move that shows belief in their quality rather than conditions.

For a country heading to only its fifth-ever World Cup, the excitement is palpable. “We are just chasing our dreams,” Beccacece says. And right now, Ecuador’s dreams look bigger — and closer — than ever.
