Back to School Means Back to Busy School Zones

The first day of school is here, and with it comes the return of morning rushes, packed school zones, and busy sidewalks. For parents, that means getting back into routine. For drivers, it means slowing down and staying alert.

According to a recent CAA survey, traffic congestion around schools continues to climb. This year, 81% of parents reported traffic buildup during drop-off and 84% during pick-up — both higher than last year’s numbers. Even more concerning, 83% of parents say they’ve witnessed unsafe driving in school zones, and nearly two-thirds now consider their child’s school zone “very unsafe.”

CAA Spokesperson Lauren Fisher says planning ahead is key:
“When we rush, we make poor decisions. Put away distractions and, if it’s safe, walk or cycle to school — it really helps ease the congestion.”

Excited kids can be unpredictable, darting into crosswalks or rushing from vehicles. That’s why drivers are urged to stay extra alert, especially around crossing guards and buses.

CAA South Central Ontario has a few simple but life-saving reminders:

  • Walk or wheel when possible to cut down on traffic.

  • Put distractions away — no phones while driving or walking.

  • Slow down and respect school zone speed limits.

  • Use safe drop-off zones instead of double parking or blocking crosswalks.

  • Stop for buses — it’s not only the law, it’s critical for safety.

  • Watch for student patrollers in lime green vests who help kids cross safely.

With thousands of kids heading back to class, the message is simple: slow down, stay alert, and make school zones safe for everyone.
