From ‘I Do’ to ‘Flight Cancelled’: Couple’s Cancun Wedding Falls Apart

For Juan and Becca Lopez, their dream destination wedding in Cancun turned into a nightmare thanks to the ongoing Air Canada flight attendants strike.

The Barrie, Ont., couple was supposed to fly out Monday morning with 27 of their guests under an Air Canada Vacations package. But less than 24 hours before departure, they were told their flight was cancelled. At first, Air Canada offered a $500 credit—far short of the $1,500 tickets the couple and their guests had paid.

The cancellation left Juan and Becca scrambling. Some of their family and friends, who had booked with other airlines, were already en route to Mexico. Meanwhile, the couple was stuck in limbo, told they weren’t eligible for a refund until the flight was officially cancelled. Even after that, Air Canada later emailed them saying no rebooking options were available despite advertising otherwise.

The couple, who already had a small ceremony earlier this year, had poured their savings into making this destination wedding happen. “It’s not just about us—it’s about our family and friends who sacrificed to be there,” Juan said.

Air Canada has since apologized to passengers impacted by the strike, saying it’s working with more than 120 airlines to rebook travelers. But for Juan and Becca, the lack of answers left them no choice but to accept a refund. Instead of saying “I do” in Cancun, they spent their would-be wedding day in tears.
