Costa Rica tightens prison rules, adopts El Salvador’s Bukele model

Costa Rica is overhauling its prison system, taking a page from El Salvador’s tough-on-crime playbook. Inspired by President Bukele’s approach, they’re tightening visitation rules, limiting phone calls, and cracking down on contraband to boost security. They’re also expanding maximum-security spaces and building a massive new prison with El Salvador’s help. The government says it’s about controlling rising crime while still supporting inmate rehab programs, but human rights groups are already raising red flags. It’s a big shift for a country long seen as one of the safest in Central America.
