U.S. senator meets with Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was wrongly deported to El Salvador

Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador after the latter was wrongfully deported by the Trump administration due to an administrative error. The deportation, which defied a Supreme Court directive to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S., has sparked a potential constitutional crisis.

Abrego Garcia, who fled El Salvador at 16 to escape gang violence, was never charged with a crime and had legal protection to stay in the U.S. Despite this, the Trump administration deported him under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 and accused him—without evidence—of being in MS-13, a claim echoed by the White House and Trump officials.

Senator Van Hollen, denied earlier access to the prison where Abrego Garcia was held, finally met him and relayed a message to his wife. He criticized both U.S. and Salvadoran officials for refusing to act, while the Salvadoran president and vice president have shown no intent to release him.

A U.S. judge has threatened contempt charges over these deportations, which include hundreds of others under similar conditions. Despite the Supreme Court ruling, the Trump administration has signaled it will not act to bring Abrego Garcia back.
