Mark Carney will be sworn in today as the new Prime Minister of Canada

March 14, 2025

Mark Carney will officially become Canada’s 24th prime minister today, succeeding Justin Trudeau. The former central banker will be sworn in by Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall, with a leaner cabinet focused on economic stability, U.S. trade negotiations, and Canadian sovereignty. Key ministers, including Mélanie Joly, Dominic LeBlanc, and François-Philippe Champagne, will retain their roles, while others, like Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, will be reassigned.

Carney, who does not yet hold a parliamentary seat, is expected to call a general election soon—likely before March 24—potentially making his tenure as prime minister brief. His leadership follows Trudeau’s resignation amid declining Liberal support, though recent polling suggests the party is regaining momentum. Carney’s first official trip as prime minister will take him to London and Paris next week.
