Shopping in the U.S. will cost travellers more amid trade war

Canada has implemented a 25% surtax on most goods brought back from the U.S., including groceries and clothing, in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports. The tax applies to all cross-border shoppers and packages but exempts gas pumped directly into vehicles. Travelers must still pay duties and taxes on purchases exceeding their personal exemption, with the surtax added to certain U.S.-origin goods since March 4. The policy has led to quieter border crossings, and officials advise shoppers to review the affected goods list before returning to Canada.
