Shea Johnson has officially taken over as executor of his late father Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson’s estate, replacing his sister Anika Johnson, who passed away in November 2023. Steely, a legendary reggae and dancehall producer from the duo Steely & Clevie, was behind the iconic Fish Market rhythm, which became the foundation for Shabba Ranks’ Dem Bowand, allegedly, over 1,800 reggaeton songs without proper licensing.
Shea Johnson has now been added as a plaintiff in the ongoing copyright lawsuit against major artists like Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Drake, and Justin Bieber. The lawsuit, filed by Steely & Clevie Productions, Cleveland Browne, Shea Johnson, and Carl Gibson (executor of producer Count Shelly’s estate), seeks compensation for unauthorized use of Fish Market. Count Shelly, who passed in 2020, played a role in adapting the rhythm, which later became widely used in reggaeton. Shea, a property and auto appraiser in New York, was unanimously chosen by his siblings to represent their father’s estate.
