A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck northern Chile on Thursday, with its epicenter 104 km (64 miles) southwest of San Pedro de Atacama, near the Bolivian border.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake occurred at 12:21 p.m. local time at a depth of 93 km (58 miles). Chile’s national disaster agency classified it as a medium-intensity event, confirming no tsunami threatand no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Chile, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the most earthquake-prone countries. The nation still remembers the devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake in 2010, which triggered a tsunami and claimed 526 lives. Since then, authorities have improved emergency preparedness and strengthened infrastructure to mitigate earthquake damage.
