Despite winning two Oscars, Emilia Pérez faced controversy over its depiction of Mexico. In the Oscars pressroom, Best Supporting Actress winner Zoë Saldaña addressed criticism, apologizing to those who felt offended but emphasizing that the film was made with love.

The film follows a drug kingpin, played by Karla Sofía Gascón—the first openly transgender Best Actress nominee—who undergoes gender reassignment surgery and becomes an activist. Critics argue the movie downplays Mexico’s drug war and its tragic consequences, including mass disappearances.

Saldaña defended the film, stating its focus was not on Mexico but on four women navigating oppression. She expressed openness to discussions on how the film could have been improved, welcoming conversations with the Mexican community.
