Ecuador’s Electoral Court suspends Vice President’s Rights

Ecuador’s electoral court has suspended Vice President Verónica Abad’s political rights for two years beyond her term, effectively removing her from office. The ruling found that she engaged in gender-related violence by libeling Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld. Abad was fined $14,000 and ordered to issue a public apology, though she may appeal the decision.

The move comes amid a long-standing feud between Abad and President Daniel Noboa. Since their 2023 campaign, the two have been estranged, with Noboa previously sending Abad abroad for diplomatic duties and avoiding handing her temporary power.

The ruling has political implications as Ecuador approaches a runoff election on April 13. Noboa narrowly won the first round on February 9 against leftist candidate Luisa González. The case highlights tensions within Ecuador’s leadership as the country navigates its political future.
