Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays failed to reach a contract extension before his self-imposed deadline, making it likely he will become a free agent next summer. The 25-year-old, who arrived at spring training in Florida, emphasized that both sides had different valuations and negotiations never got close. Guerrero Jr. prefers not to discuss contracts during the season to avoid distractions and is open to offers from other teams but hasn’t ruled out returning to Toronto.

Guerrero Jr. and teammate Bo Bichette could both hit free agency if no deals are reached. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays had an active offseason, missing out on top free agents Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki but signing Anthony Santander, Jeff Hoffman, and Max Scherzer. They also traded for Andrés Giménez and Nick Sandlin. Toronto begins spring training games on Feb. 22 against the Yankees, with the regular-season opener set for March 27 against the Orioles. Guerrero Jr. remains focused on winning a World Series, a goal his father never achieved.
