Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, a survey by Leger for the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) reveals that 63% of Ontarians plan to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles, with 48% intending to place bets on the game. Among key findings:

  • Gambling Influences: 35% have bet after seeing ads online or on TV, rising to 42% for those under 44 and 44% among BIPOC groups.
  • Confidence & Risk: 67% believe their sports knowledge gives them an edge; however, 36% have bet more than they could afford in the past year.
  • Betting Types: 50% will use online sportsbooks, 30% will bet with family/friends, 27% on lottery tickets, and 20% in pools.
  • Wager Amounts: 55% will bet $100 or less; 19% between $101 and $500, and 8% over $500.

Sarah McCarthy, RGC CEO, stresses the importance of mindful gambling, cautioning against the illusion of control. The survey highlights that while 25% of bettors plan to use responsible gambling features like setting money limits or taking cooling-off periods, 33% have no plans to use any safeguards.

Alcohol consumption (86%) and attempts to recover previous losses (10%) are key motivators for gambling. With 36% of respondents expressing concern about potential gambling problems, the RGC emphasizes awareness and risk reduction strategies.
