Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government will send a formal letter to Google after the company stated it would follow a U.S. government directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps. This decision stems from an executive order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum emphasized that the Gulf of Mexico has held its name since 1607 and criticized the move, suggesting sarcastically that North America should instead be renamed “América Mexicana.” Google explained that it updates geographic names based on official sources, but many Mexican officials and citizens expressed outrage, asserting that the Gulf’s historic identity must remain intact. The Mexican tourism ministry and officials from Veracruz reaffirmed their pride in the Gulf of Mexico’s longstanding name.
