Mexico’s president has a plan to promote non-violent music over ‘narco corridos’

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a plan to reduce the popularity of “narco corridos,” a music genre often associated with glorifying drug cartel violence. Instead of banning the genre, Sheinbaum plans to promote alternative musical styles that celebrate other cultural values. The campaign includes a competition encouraging corrido bands to create lyrics with positive messages.

A key figure in the effort is Durango Governor Esteban Villegas, a singer of traditional “banda” music, which often highlights themes like hard work and rural life. While narco corridos remain popular with some audiences, Sheinbaum aims to shift cultural preferences by offering compelling alternatives that celebrate non-violent themes.
