Yolanda Saldívar, convicted for the 1995 murder of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez, has filed for parole after nearly 30 years in prison. Saldívar, now 64, was the president of Selena’s fan club and embezzled $60,000, leading to her dismissal by Selena. The murder occurred during an argument in a Corpus Christi hotel room.

While serving her life sentence, Saldívar has reportedly maintained a clean record but remains in protective custody due to threats from fellow inmates who view her as a target. Former inmates confirm widespread animosity toward her in prison.

Saldívar claims the shooting was accidental and continues to describe herself as a “political prisoner.” If paroled, she plans to live with family and seek employment. However, Carlos Valdez, the prosecutor from her trial, opposes her release, citing the ongoing public interest and potential safety concerns. Valdez believes Saldívar is safer remaining incarcerated.

Selena’s legacy continues to resonate nearly 30 years after her death, underscoring the lasting impact of the case.
