Massive waves up to 13 feet high have caused significant disruption along the coastlines of Peru and Ecuador, leaving one person dead and prompting widespread closures. In Ecuador, the body of a missing person was recovered in the coastal city of Manta. In Peru, 91 of 121 ports have been closed until January 1, with several beaches and tourist activities also shut down to ensure public safety.

The waves, driven by strong winds originating off the U.S. coast, submerged jetties and public squares, forcing residents to evacuate to higher ground. Areas like Callao near Lima, home to Peru’s main port, have barred fishing and tourist boats. The high surf has damaged small fishing boats and seaside businesses, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.
