Uruguay secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Colombia in their South American World Cup qualifier with a last-minute goal, easing pressure on coach Marcelo Bielsa. This was Uruguay’s first home win in a year and first victory since July’s Copa America. Juan Fernando Quintero scored first for Colombia, but Uruguay equalized with an own goal by Davinson Sánchez. Rodrigo Aguirre then put Uruguay ahead, scoring his first goal for the national team. In injury time, André Gomez tied the game for Colombia, but Manuel Ugarte sealed Uruguay’s win with a shot from the edge of the box.

Coach Bielsa, who had faced criticism from players like Luis Suárez after the Copa America, said this win was a much-needed boost for the team. Colombia’s coach Néstor Lorenzo expressed frustration over the loss, noting Uruguay’s skilled players and strong attackers. The match followed tensions from their previous encounter in the Copa America semifinals.

Argentina remains at the top of the standings despite a 2-1 loss to Paraguay, with Uruguay and Colombia three points behind. Brazil is fourth after a 1-1 draw with Venezuela, and Ecuador, in fifth, won 4-0 against Bolivia. Uruguay will face Brazil next, and Colombia will play against Ecuador on Tuesday.
