Argentine soccer star Ángel Di María announced he will not return to his hometown club in Rosario due to safety concerns following a violent threat involving his family. A pig’s head with a bullet hole and a note threatening his daughter was left at his sister’s business, warning that his life and his family’s safety were at risk if he joined Rosario Central. Di María, 36, who played pivotal roles in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup and 2021 Copa América victories, expressed that protecting his family’s well-being was his priority. He criticized assurances from local officials about public figure safety, pointing out widespread violence affecting everyday residents. The city of Rosario has been plagued by escalating gang violence, which has impacted other prominent figures, including Lionel Messi’s family. Di María’s stance highlights the broader risks faced by high-profile South American athletes, who have experienced various forms of crime, including threats, blackmail, and kidnapping, exemplified by the kidnapping of Liverpool player Luis Díaz’s father in Colombia.
