Spanish police have made the largest drug bust in the country’s history, uncovering 13 tons of cocaine hidden in a banana shipment from Ecuador. The operation, conducted by the National Police and the Tax Agency, took place in Algeciras on October 14 after officers grew suspicious of the shipment due to past illegal trafficking connections of the Ecuadorian exporter. Upon inspection, they found the usual banana boxes, but hidden behind them were identical boxes containing bricks of cocaine.

This seizure, weighing more than 25,000 pounds, is the second largest drug bust in Europe. In addition to the drugs, police raided five locations in Madrid and Alicante, seizing documents for further investigation. One woman connected to the receiving company was arrested in Toledo, while two company managers remain on the run. The previous record in Spain for cocaine seizures was set in 2023 with 9.3 tons of cocaine.
