A lightning strike during a football match in Peru killed a 34-year-old player, Hugo de la Cruz, and injured five others. The incident occurred during a game between Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca in Huancayo province. Play was initially halted when lightning first hit, but a second strike hit players as they were leaving the field, causing several to collapse.

Hugo de la Cruz, a defender for Familia Chocca, died while being taken to the hospital. The local authorities expressed condolences to his family and support for the injured players, two of whom have been released from the hospital, while the others remain under care.

This is the first known fatal lightning strike at a football match in Peru, although similar incidents causing injuries have happened before. Such tragedies have occurred globally, including the death of South African midfielder Luyanda Ntshangase in 2018 after a lightning strike during a game.
