Bukele donates 2 Bitcoin towards building 1,000 schools in Honduras

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele recently donated two Bitcoin (approximately $133,000) to support the construction of 1,000 schools in Honduras. The donation, made from Bukele’s personal wallet, was handed to Shin Fujiyama, founder of Students Helping Honduras, an organization focused on reducing poverty through education. This contribution aligns with Bukele’s ongoing advocacy for Bitcoin, which he made legal tender in El Salvador in 2021.

While Bukele continues promoting Bitcoin, its adoption in El Salvador remains low. A recent survey found that only 7.5% of Salvadorans use cryptocurrency for transactions, with just 1.3% supporting Bitcoin’s role in the country’s future. Despite this, 58% of respondents expressed confidence in Bukele’s leadership, particularly regarding economic and security improvements. Bukele’s pro-Bitcoin policies have faced international criticism, including from the IMF, which urged limits on public sector exposure to Bitcoin.
