Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was found decapitated, days after taking office. His murder intensifies pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum’s new administration to address cartel-related violence. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed that Arcos was traveling alone for a meeting with members of the Los Ardillos gang when he was killed. Guerrero, known for its opium poppy production, is contested by numerous drug-trafficking gangs. Arcos’s murder follows the killing of another municipal official days earlier. In response, Sheinbaum emphasized a focus on crime prevention and intelligence, rejecting hardline tactics.
