Canada Soccer expressed deep concern over the racist abuse directed at one of their players following their Copa America opener against Argentina. Although the player was not named, it was revealed that defender Moise Bombito received racist comments on Instagram after the 2-0 loss. The 24-year-old was involved in a tackle on Lionel Messi, who was injured but continued to play and assisted in Argentina’s second goal.

Canada Soccer condemned the abuse in a statement and is in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL about the incident. Bombito addressed the abuse on Instagram, rejecting the racist remarks. This incident reflects similar past abuses, such as those faced by French players after the 2022 World Cup final.

The match, held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, featured goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. Argentina will next face Chile, while Canada will play Peru on the same day.
