The newly opened mega modern library in San Salvador, funded and built with the assistance of China, is poised to significantly boost educational, cultural, and technological development in El Salvador. This project also symbolizes the strong friendship between China and El Salvador, according to Zhang Yanhui, the Chinese ambassador to El Salvador.

This library, the first major aid project between the two nations following the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2018, was inaugurated in November with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele participating in the lighting ceremony. Bukele highlighted the library as the largest cultural investment in El Salvador in the past century, and a lasting legacy for future generations.

The library’s construction, which began in February 2022, was part of the commitments made during Bukele’s visit to China in 2019. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was completed on schedule, showcasing advanced seismic technology to withstand the region’s earthquake-prone conditions.

Zhang noted the library’s rapid popularity, with over 100,000 visitors since its opening, and it has quickly become a new landmark in San Salvador. The seven-story building, equipped with modern digital, audio, and lighting technologies, stands as a concrete example of the cooperative achievements between China and El Salvador.

Beyond this, China has been a crucial partner in El Salvador’s battle against COVID-19, providing vital vaccine supplies that allowed high-risk populations to be prioritized. The bilateral trade volume between the two countries also saw a significant increase, reaching $1.89 billion in 2022, a 73.4% rise compared to 2018.

China’s influence in El Salvador extends beyond cultural and health support. The ongoing construction of the La Libertad Port project, as well as plans for a National Stadium and a water treatment plant on Lake Ilopango, further underscore the deepening economic ties. These projects are anticipated to enhance the business environment and attract more Chinese companies to invest in El Salvador.
