Russian warships arrived in Cuba on Wednesday for the first time in four years, while the Pentagon monitored their movements near the U.S. coast. Defense officials, including spokesperson Sabrina Singh, stated that the ships, which are conducting military exercises in the Caribbean, are not considered a threat. This visit, involving a nuclear-powered submarine, occurs amid increased tensions between Russia, the U.S., and its western allies due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Pentagon has been supplying Ukraine with advanced weaponry, some of which has recently been used to target Russia. U.S. Northern Command downplayed the presence of the Russian ships, describing their activities as routine, with U.S. and Canadian forces conducting patrols for defense. According to a Defense official, the Russian ships, which previously sailed in the Caribbean annually from 2013 to 2020, may also visit Venezuela.
