Ecuador files complaint against Mexico at top UN court over embassy raid

Ecuador has filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice against Mexico, alleging Mexico’s illegal granting of political asylum to former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas. This move led to Ecuador’s controversial raid on the Mexican embassy to arrest Glas, who was wanted on corruption charges. Ecuador claims Glas was not eligible for diplomatic protection as he was a fugitive convicted of common crimes, not political offenses. The raid, which occurred hours after Mexico granted asylum, violated diplomatic norms. Mexico’s consulate head in Ecuador attempted to prevent Ecuadorian police from entering the embassy, but they forcibly entered and arrested Glas. The incident has sparked condemnation from legal experts, Latin American leaders, and diplomats, with some countries like Venezuela closing their embassies in Ecuador in solidarity with Mexico.
